Factual Friday: Avoid UPL

Paralegals can perform a huge variety of legal-related tasks for which they are competent, provided they DO NOT engage in the unauthorized practice of law.

3 tips to avoid UPL:
☑️ be clear that you are a paralegal and not an attorney
☑️ do not interpret legal documents for a client
☑️ do not provide legal advice

This can be quite challenging to manage, particularly when it comes to client conversations.

Be sure to inform the client that the advice is that of the attorney and any questions or further inquiries will be passed along to the attorney.

As a paralegal, we serve as the messenger, which must be made clear.
