Overwhelm is inevitable for nearly all of us at some level and at some point in life. In the legal industry, like many other industries, overwhelm and burnout are detrimental to career growth and are damaging to client and peer relationships.

Burnout is the result of many different and often competing factors. It’s important to equip ourselves with some tools to help mitigate the overwhelm before it sets in.

Determining what works best for our unique circumstances will evolve over the course of our careers and throughout life. Be sure to be flexible and practice becoming aware of your own personal needs so you may more effectively and healthily support others.

Here are four ideas that may help mitigate the overwhelm before it hits:

  1. Schedule daily downtime
    • Even 5 minutes is a good starting point
    • Build up to a period of time that fits your lifestyle
  2. Ask for help
    • Delegate items not in your lane of expertise
    • Value yourself enough to voice your needs
  3. Set boundaries
    • Learn to say no
    • Respect your own and others
  4. Exercise self-compassion
    • Offer grace to yourself as you would your closest friend
    • Practice positive self-talk

I’m always fascinated by how others keep balance and avoid overwhelm. In my research, I’ve come across many articles that have been helpful in determining new methods to avoid burnout and ultimately mitigate the overwhelm before it takes over. Here are links to some of these articles:
