What Freedom Means—And Demands—This Fourth of July
As we celebrate the Fourth of July, I’m reflecting on the powerful tension between what freedom promises and what it requires.
Independence Day is often framed as a celebration of liberty, opportunity, and the American dream. And it is. But it’s also an invitation—to reflect, recommit, and reimagine what true freedom looks like for all people in this country.
For those of us in the legal field, this day carries particular weight.
We’re uniquely positioned to see where freedom thrives—and where it still falls short.
We navigate the complexities of justice daily.
We witness barriers, inequities, and breakthroughs.
And we carry a responsibility.
This Independence Day, I’m choosing to honor not just the idea of freedom—but the ongoing work of making it real:
- Through access to justice.
- Through equitable systems.
- Through advocating for well-being in a profession that often overlooks it.
- Through community, collaboration, and showing up with intention.
💬 Whether you’re resting, reflecting, advocating, or simply soaking in the sunshine today—I hope you find a moment to consider what freedom means to you, and what you’re doing to help extend it to others.
With gratitude, hope, and purpose—Happy Fourth of July.
