Monday Musings: Data, Deserts & Delivering Justice

As we gear up for the 2025 Equal Justice Conference (EJC), I find myself reflecting on the words of the great Maya Angelou: “We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter their colour.”

This sentiment highlights one of the most pressing issues in the legal profession today: legal deserts. It’s a topic that’s gaining momentum, and for good reason! Nearly half of all counties in the U.S. are considered “legal deserts,” areas where there are fewer than one lawyer per 1,000 people. That’s not just a statistic; it’s a crisis that impacts real people in real communities.

This year’s Equal Justice Conference promises to provide insights, strategies, and data to help address this problem. The conference, happening May 15–17, 2025, brings together legal professionals, advocates, and change-makers. All focused on enhancing access to justice for underserved populations. If you’re a legal professional, this is your chance to dive deep into innovative approaches that will shape the future of legal aid.

🌵 Session Spotlight: “Using Data-Driven Solutions to Empower Lawyers Serving Legal Deserts”

One session I’m particularly excited about is “Using Data-Driven Solutions to Empower Lawyers Serving Legal Deserts. This session will provide concrete examples of how data can empower legal professionals to combat the challenges faced by those living in legal deserts.

This session is packed with expertise from Jessica Bednarz (IAALS), Kari Burns (Tucker Ellis), Hannah Catt (Purdue Global Law School), and Ryann Peyton (Legal Entrepreneurs for Justice). They will discuss:

  • 📊 Key Data on legal deserts, showing just how severe the access to justice issue really is across the nation.
  • 🧩 Contributing Factors like economic barriers, systemic inequities, and the lack of infrastructure in rural and underserved communities.
  • 💡 Innovative Solutions featuring real-world examples such as the Cleveland Legal Collaborative, Colorado’s Legal Entrepreneurs for Justice, and Purdue Global Law School. All are using data to connect underserved communities with affordable legal services.

What excites me most is that this session isn’t only about identifying the problem—it’s about finding real, actionable solutions. Data isn’t just numbers on a page; it’s a tool to drive change and make justice more accessible for all.

🧠 Why This Matters

The data makes it clear: access to justice is uneven. While large cities may have a plethora of legal professionals to serve their populations, rural areas and many urban neighborhoods are severely underserved. As legal professionals, we’re in a unique position to help change that. By harnessing the power of data, we can strategically close these gaps and increase the impact of legal services nationwide.

It’s not just about making legal representation more available—it’s about making it sustainable. And that’s where you come in.
