Let’s face it—overwhelm is the unwanted houseguest we didn’t invite but always seems to show up unannounced. In the legal world, it tends to arrive with luggage full of deadlines, high stakes, and never-ending to-do lists. If you let it settle in, it brings along its best friend: burnout.

The good news? You don’t have to host this uninvited duo. Instead, you can show your unwanted guests the door before they get too comfortable. Here are four tried-and-true ways to keep overwhelm at bay and protect your sanity:

Schedule Daily Downtime (Non-Negotiable!)

Yes, you’re busy. But even a superhero needs a breather! Start small—five glorious, uninterrupted minutes a day. Build up to a time that feels luxurious yet sustainable. You’ll be amazed at how recharging your batteries just a little each day can keep you from running on empty.

Ask for Help (Because You’re Human)

Spoiler alert: You don’t have to do it all! Delegate tasks that aren’t in your wheelhouse or that don’t bring you joy. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a power move. And while you’re at it, let your inner voice repeat this mantra: “I am worth it.”

Set Boundaries Like a Pro

Here’s the tea—“no” is a complete sentence. Use it liberally. Whether it’s declining a project that doesn’t align with your priorities or shutting off work notifications after hours, boundaries are your best defense against overwhelm. Bonus: They help others respect your time, too.

Be Your Own Biggest Cheerleader

If your inner voice is a drill sergeant, it’s time to trade it in for a compassionate coach. Offer yourself the same kindness you’d give your best friend. Celebrate wins, however small, and practice positive self-talk. You deserve it!

What’s Your Secret Sauce?

Overwhelm doesn’t have to win. By scheduling downtime, asking for help, setting boundaries, and being kind to yourself, you can stay ahead of the game. Of course, these strategies are just the beginning—what works for you might evolve as you do.
