Why Staying Home When Sick is the Smartest Move

Picture this: it’s Monday morning, and your throat feels like it’s hosting a cactus convention. But you’re a legal professional, and you have court deadlines, client calls, and a team relying on you. So, you do what many of us have been guilty of—you power through. Let me stop you right there, my fellow overachiever. This is your friendly, slightly sniffling reminder: when sick, stay home.
Why Do We Do It?
I get it. We’re wired to keep going, to meet deadlines, and to never let the team down. But here’s the rub: showing up sick is a lose-lose. According to the CDC, adults spread respiratory illnesses most easily in the first 3-4 days of feeling unwell. Translation? That “selfless” act of coming to work sick could inadvertently turn your office into a Petri dish.
Productivity Deadzone
If the guilt monster still isn’t convinced, let’s talk productivity. A study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that presenteeism—working while sick—can reduce productivity by up to 33%. The COVID pandemic amplified this issue as we realized how quickly illnesses can spread in the workplace, forcing many industries to adopt remote work models. While this transition proved that many tasks can be done from home, it also made it easier to prioritize work over health.
Engage Recovery mode
Now, before you reach for your laptop to “just check a few emails,” remember: rest means rest. Use this time to unplug from work, hydrate, sleep, and binge-watch legal dramas that let you yell “Objection!” at the TV without repercussions. Returning healthy actually serves your clients, colleagues, and caseloads far better.

So, let’s normalize taking care of ourselves—for our health, our work, and everyone who shares our air. The next time you’re tempted to “just push through,” remember this: the court cases can wait, but your well-being can’t.
