Today’s the day—I’m off to the UK! My excitement for new adventures is almost palpable, yet I can’t help but feel that familiar pull of “work mode.” The to-do lists and project plans cling to my mind, even as I’m ready to check out and explore. For those of us in the legal profession, this tug-of-war with vacation time is all too common. But here’s the thing: taking time away from work isn’t a luxury. Research tells us it’s a vital part of sustaining sharp minds and resilient spirits.

Burnout Reduction

Consider this: studies show that professionals who take regular breaks and vacation time not only experience reduced burnout, but they also enjoy higher levels of productivity and creativity. According to the American Psychological Association, employees who take vacations come back with enhanced cognitive flexibility and a fresh perspective on their tasks. Those mental breaks actually improve our ability to make strategic decisions, which is critical for those of us managing complex cases and high-stakes projects.

Career Sustainability

Moreover, the World Health Organization points to stress and burnout as major health concerns that can severely affect mental and physical health. Long hours without sufficient rest elevate cortisol levels, which research shows can harm memory, weaken immunity, and reduce overall work quality. In fact, a report from Harvard Business Review found that employees who take regular vacations are 30% more likely to get promoted, highlighting a clear link between breaks and sustained career growth.

Rejuvenate Minds

As I head into my own UK adventure, I’m reminded that these breaks are more than just days off. Exploration and play—whether it’s wandering historic streets or trying new foods—stimulate parts of the brain we rarely use in our daily work. New experiences fuel our adaptability, expand our perspectives, and increase our resilience. The legal world will be waiting when I return, but I’ll face it refreshed, renewed, and ready to bring my best.

So here’s my mantra for this trip: “Embrace adventure; return stronger.” What mantras or intentions do you set for yourself when taking time off work? Do you think time away helps to sustain sharp minds?
