Downtime is Productive: Why Scheduling Rest is a Power Move

In a profession that thrives on deadlines, demands, and doing more, the idea of scheduling rest can feel countercultural. But here’s the truth I’ve learned—both personally and professionally: downtime isn’t indulgent, it’s essential.
As legal professionals, we pride ourselves on being dependable, productive, and always a step ahead. But if we’re honest, too often our calendars are booked solid with obligations—and recovery is an afterthought. We push rest to the margins and hope we’ll “find time” later. (Spoiler: we usually don’t.)
Let’s shift that narrative!
📆 Schedule It Like a Deadline
What gets scheduled gets done. Just as you wouldn’t miss a filing deadline or a client meeting, your rest deserves the same respect. Whether it’s a 15-minute walk between calls or a half-day recharge once a month, downtime should be non-negotiable.
Try this:
- Block “white space” in your calendar before it fills up.
- Label it clearly (“Rest,” “Reset,” or my personal favorite, “Me Time”).
- Protect it like any other professional priority.
🌿 Rest is Productive
Here’s a mindset shift: Rest is a strategic tool. Research from the Harvard Business Review shows that professionals who regularly disconnect experience higher problem-solving abilities and more sustainable productivity.
Rest isn’t a reward for hard work. It’s a condition for it.
Downtime supports:
- Better decision-making
- More creativity and innovation
- Stronger emotional regulation
- Burnout prevention
🛠 Building a Rest Practice
If rest feels unnatural to you (been there), start small:
- Schedule micro-breaks during the workday.
- Make one evening a week screen-free.
- Choose a “Sabbath-style” Sunday with no professional obligations.
And here’s the kicker: once you start honoring your downtime, others will follow your lead. You’re not just giving yourself permission—you’re modeling a healthier path for your team, your clients, and the profession.
