Why Letting Loose is the Secret to Thriving in the Legal Grind
Prioritize Play, Embrace Joy: A Wellness Revolution for Legal Pros

When was the last time you played? And no, I don’t mean strategizing your next big case or “winning” at email inbox zero. I mean actual, unadulterated play—building a sandcastle, flying a kite, or unleashing your inner rockstar at karaoke night. If you can’t remember, you’re not alone. Let’s talk about ways to prioritize play and in turn, embrace joy.
As a legal professional, I know how easy it is to bury myself in work. Between court deadlines, client meetings, and my second cup of coffee, “play” can feel like a frivolous luxury. But research says otherwise. Studies show that prioritizing play isn’t just good for the soul; it’s essential for your professional success and mental health.
The Science of Play
Dr. Stuart Brown, a leading expert on play and founder of the National Institute for Play, argues that play is vital for cognitive function, creativity, and stress reduction. It’s not just for kids! In his book Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul, Brown explains how play triggers the release of dopamine, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter, which helps regulate mood and improve focus.
Additionally, a 2019 study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that adults who engaged in playful activities experienced lower stress levels and higher overall well-being. And let’s face it—if anyone needs stress reduction, it’s us legal warriors.
Why Legal Professionals Need Play
The legal field isn’t exactly known for fostering joy. A 2021 survey by the Journal of the American Bar Association found that 70% of legal professionals experience high levels of stress, with 1 in 3 reporting symptoms of burnout. These stats are alarming but unsurprising. Between the constant grind and the pressure to perform, it’s easy to forget that joy is a critical component of resilience.
When we prioritize play, we give our brains a chance to recharge and reset. Play sparks creativity, which helps us solve problems more effectively (looking at you, cryptic legalese). It also strengthens social bonds, which are crucial for building strong teams and thriving client relationships.
My Journey to Joy
Let me tell you how I was reminded about prioritizing play. A few weeks ago, I decided to tag along with a friend to visit her horse and his bestie. Between the warm welcome we received from these geldings, their desire to be near us (and each other), and their run, roll, and frolic in the arena, my energy was renewed. It was truly heartwarming and an obvious reminder how vital play is for us mammals. Watching them exercise with such joy and excitement, I felt lighter—more energized. That window of joy spilled over into my workweek. I was sharper, calmer, and yes, happier.
Since then, I’ve made play a non-negotiable part of my wellness routine. Whether it’s game night with friends, a silly dance break in my kitchen, or trying something new like pottery, play has become my secret weapon against burnout.
How to Prioritize Play
If you’re ready to embrace joy, here’s how to get started:
- Schedule It: Block off time for play in your calendar, just like a meeting. Play deserves a priority slot.
- Keep It Simple: You don’t need expensive equipment or a weekend getaway. Start small with a quick round of Pictionary or a stroll through a park.
- Find Your People: Connect with colleagues, friends, or family for playful activities. Shared joy builds stronger relationships.
- Ditch the Guilt: Remember, play isn’t wasted time. It’s an investment in your well-being and productivity.

So, my fellow legal professionals, let’s trade a little seriousness for silliness. Prioritize play, embrace joy, and watch your personal and professional life flourish. The office will still be there tomorrow, but the chance to laugh until your sides hurt? That’s priceless.
Go play—you’ve earned it!
