Integrate Physical Activity

As a legal professional, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to stay active when you’re buried in case files, client communications, and endless meetings. But I’ve discovered that integrating physical activity into my workday isn’t just possible—it’s a game-changer for my well-being and productivity. Let’s explore how I learned to integrate physical activity into my regular routine.

Above is a picture of me post-gym yesterday – it was 97 degrees outside and 94 degrees inside the gym. Hello sweatville!! But the biggest hurdle is getting there, and I stay committed to my wellness by having started somewhere…

Start Small

I started small, with simple desk exercises. Now, I regularly do neck rolls, shoulder stretches, and leg extensions while reviewing documents. It’s amazing how these micro-movements can relieve tension and keep me alert.

Walking Meetings

Walking meetings have become my secret weapon. Instead of sitting in my stuffy basement office, I take a stroll around the block for informal discussions. It’s a breath of fresh air—literally—and often leads to more creative problem-solving.

Sit-Stand Combo

I’ve also embraced the standing desk revolution in my home office space. I alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day, which has significantly enhanced my posture and increased my energy levels. Reminding myself to move every so often makes a huge impact in my daily activity.

Regular Exercise

Regular workouts are another lifesaver and have been for years. At least three times a week, I hit the gym near my home/office for a sweat session. It’s incredible how much clearer my mind is for tackling the tasks of the day after a mighty endorphin boost.

Take the Stairs

I know many colleagues who have made a point of always taking the stairs instead of the elevator. It’s a small change, but those extra steps add up over time. Think of it as investing in yourself at no cost other than sweat equity!

The benefits of integrating physical activity into my workday have been profound. I sleep better, feel less stressed, and have more stamina for those long hours when a case demands it. Plus, I’ve noticed I’m more focused and efficient when I’m regularly moving throughout the day.

For my fellow legal professionals, I can’t recommend this wellness strategy enough. Start small, be consistent, and watch how physical activity integration transforms your work, heck, your entire life.

I’d love to hear how you integrate physical activity in your routine? Life is so full and busy for most of us, it’s always great to glean insights from others that have found something that works. Please share in a comment on the blog or send me an email at kelli@klrparalegal.com
