As a legal professional, my days are often consumed by long hours in the office. Whether it’s researching case files, drafting documents, or coordinating with or clients, days are long. It’s easy to get caught up in the demands and forget to take care of myself. However, I’ve come to realize the immense importance of taking breaks to get some fresh air throughout the day. Here’s why:

Boost in Mood and Productivity

Stepping outside for even just a few minutes can work wonders for my mood and productivity. Research conducted by psychologists at the University of Michigan found that spending time outdoors can significantly improve mood and cognitive function1. When I feel overwhelmed or stuck on a particular task, a quick stroll outside helps clear my mind. I can then return to work with renewed focus. I even use a walk outside as a reward for marking items off my to-do list.

Stress Reduction

The legal profession is notorious for its high levels of stress. Deadlines, court proceedings, and client demands can all take a toll on mental well-being. Fortunately, spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and promote relaxation. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that spending just 20 minutes in a natural setting can lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress.2 When I start to feel the weight of my caseload bearing down on me, a brief escape outdoors provides much-needed relief.

Physical Health Benefits

Sitting at a desk for hours on end isn’t just mentally taxing – it can also have negative effects on physical health. Prolonged sedentary behavior has been linked to an increased risk of health issues. Conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and musculoskeletal problems are more prevalent in a sedentary lifestyle. By taking regular breaks to get outside and move my body, I’m improving my mood and productivity while also safeguarding my long-term health.

In conclusion, prioritizing time to get some fresh air isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. For legal professionals looking to thrive in their careers while maintaining their well-being, go get some fresh air! The next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by the demands of your job, take a step outside and breathe in the revitalizing power of nature.
